Wait, are we the first generation to lose a full year of our live?

2020 will probably be remembered as the year the world stopped working, shopping, going to school, travelling, and kissing strangers. Or maybe 2020 will be remembered as the year the world learned not to mess with Carole fucking Baskin.

Anyways, we can agree on one thing, 2020 was not a happy year. Many families lost beloved ones, many people lost their jobs and many businesses went bankrupt.

I personnally spent most of it working from home in my pyjamas, going out once a week to buy grosseries, baking my own bread and… no that’s pretty much it. (And the bread tasted terrible.)

So when my friends called me for my birthday, I said no, we are not doing this, I’m not getting one year older for this shit, no, no, nope. Let’s just pretend this never happened and reset 2020: On the 31st of december 2020, one second after midnight, it will be the 1st of January 2020.

2020 Cancelled

We are certainly not the first generation to experience this, the world stopped so many times in history due to wars, plagues and natural disasters.

But this is different, we thought that science and civilization reached a point where we are immune to such events. The COVID-19 crisis shaked all our beliefs and certainties about the world and the future, and its effects will probbaly remain for several years. Don’t expect to resume your “normal” life in 2021, experts say 2025 at best, and only if things go as expected. So better accept the idea that 2020 is a turning point.

In conclusion, this is not a year lost, it’s not a break, it’s just the beginning of a new era. We’ll have to change our way of life, learn new habits, rethink businesses and services, stop complaining and deal with what humanity made with the planet. So basically do what humanity has been doing for thousands of years: Evolve.
